The Do-It-Yourself Audio Solution

If you just create a link to an audio file on your website the visitor has to wait for the whole file to be downloaded before it can play. For streaming audio you need an audio player, or container, that contains code to allow the audio to stream.

If you want to go the less expensive route you will want to use MP3 SoundStream. As shown in the video demo it's not as flexible and takes a little more effort, but we've found that it's a good program for the price.

It's a program that takes .wav or .mp3 files and converts them into a Flash format for streaming. You can also add a controller or have the audio play on your web site with no controller.

The advantages are:

  • Low, one time cost
  • Compresses and normalizes audio files
  • No special streaming server required
  • Audio Postcards

The disadvantages:

  • Only works on Windows computers (although will stream from both Linux and Windows servers)
  • Have to use a separate recorder/editor
  • Helps to have some familiarity with html
  • Firefox users may have to click twice to play
  • Teleprompter costs extra

Of course, if you are using a WordPress blog, it's a simple matter to use a plugin to stream audio. One such is the aptly named "Audio Player" plugin but there are many more, most of which will play either audio or video.
